You Go Girl – S.T.E.A.M. Camp for Girls

Registration for 2019 be available by December 15, 2018.

Full-day program which focuses on the empowerment of girls and self esteem. The instructors of this program are all strong, intelligent women to serve as role models. This camp includes all the elements of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) and daily P.E. The science themes revolve around the idea of healthy body, healthy mind, and healthy relationships.

The Science of a Healthy Body & Fitness

Science: Girls ages 9-13 experience great changes in their bodies and often feel insecure in a world where the media often portrays unrealistic body images. This class will learn about the importance of healthy body image as a form of self-empowerment. We will discuss the concept of BMI as opposed to being focused on weight. Students will explore the science of various body systems including the muscular system, skeletal system, and endocrine system. We will conduct experiments around heart rate and breathing rate as it relates to a variety of exercises. Our girls will learn physical education techniques to improve strength, flexibility and overall fitness through daily yoga classes. This class will encourage young ladies to learn more about their changing bodies and gain confidence in health and fitness suited for this age group.

Art: Students will create individual and collaborative art pieces that inspire them to see the beauty in their self and others. Students will practice a variety of fine art techniques including line drawing, watercolor and acrylic painting and photography.

Technology Exploration Stations: Students will engage in technology-based activities and centers that may include: video editing with WeVideo, Makey Makey, virtual reality, video game design with Scratch, computer programming with Raspberry Pi, and Green Screen.

The Science of a Healthy Mind

Science: The mind is a powerful tool. Students will explore the science of the nervous system including the how neural pathways are formed to create new skills. In Science class girls will dissect a brain and learn about how the different regions in the brain control various body functions and personality traits. They will learn techniques to keep the brain healthy through fun games and hands-on activities. Students will explore how lack of sleep or too much stress can have a negative impact on learning and thinking.

Art: Students will use their learning about the brain to create mind-blowing art pieces from a variety of fine art techniques including origami, watercolor painting and chalk pastels.

Technology Exploration Stations: Students will engage in technology-based activities and centers that may include: video editing with WeVideo, Makey Makey, virtual reality, video game design with Scratch, computer programming with Raspberry Pi, and Green Screen.

The Science of Healthy Eating

Science: Why is nutrition an important factor in becoming healthy and strong? Girls ages 9-13 need a specific nutrients to feed their changing bodies and developing brains. Students will learn the science behind healthy eating and will taste some healthy snack choices. Students will do chemistry lab activities to explore the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids. Students will investigate the role of many vitamins and minerals to learn why they need them in their diets them healthy and energized.

Art: Students will use various fine art mediums to create stunning art pieces such as a still-life drawing of healthy foods. Students will even use fruits and vegetables as tools to paint abstract art.
Technology Exploration Stations: Students will engage in technology-based activities and centers that may include: video editing with WeVideo, Makey Makey, virtual reality, video game design with Scratch, computer programming with Raspberry Pi, and Green Screen.

The Science of Healthy Relationships

Science: Relationship science is critical in the formation of social skills like effective communication and establishing boundaries. Girls will study a variety of social situations and practice techniques for effective communication. Girls will learn how to set healthy boundaries for friendships including how to say no and combat peer pressure. Movie scenes, Ted-Ed talks and discussions will be tools in this class. Daily yoga class will be part of this fun class. Writing, acting and performing a end-of-week skit will help girls to engage in self expression while practicing various forms of communication.

Art: Students will also create art pieces that help them express their identity through a variety of art mediums including painting, writing and sculpture.

Technology Exploration Stations: Students will engage in technology-based activities and centers that may include: video editing with WeVideo, Makey Makey, virtual reality, video game design with Scratch, computer programming with Raspberry Pi, and Green Screen.
